What are cockroaches?
Cockroaches are common household pests and are regularly associated with densely populated areas but can become an issue in any of our homes or businesses. The more people and buildings around, the more places these insects can feed, breed, and continue to increase their populations.
Cockroaches have oval bodies flattened from top to bottom; many roaches have wings, but most don't fly. The cockroach's primary mode of transportation is using their six legs or hitchhiking inside of objects that are moved from place to place.
Most cockroaches are dark in color, which helps to camouflage them in their hiding spots. Cockroaches are nocturnal; during the day, they hide in tight spaces, and at night they run around searching for crumbs, sticky spills, or globs of toothpaste to fill their bellies.
Are cockroaches dangerous?
Cockroaches are dangerous due to the numerous bacteria, diseases, and human pathogens they can spread as they move about. Cockroaches can contaminate any surface with things that can make you and your family ill. Dysentery, salmonellosis, gastroenteritis, and E. coli are examples of diseases they spread.
In addition, their presence puts a lot of allergens in the air that can trigger breathing difficulties, skin allergies, and asthma attacks.
Why do I have a cockroach problem?
Unfortunately, cockroaches can become an issue in any of our homes, as most provide them with what they need to live comfortably. Cockroaches live in places that provide warmth, moisture, food, and areas of shelter.
Homeowners can accidentally introduce these insects into their houses in storage boxes, deliveries, secondhand furniture or appliances, and even grocery bags where cockroaches are hiding.
Additionally, cockroaches find their way into houses on their own, moving through open windows, gaps under doors, or through vents and openings in the exterior of a structure. Lots of entry points and the desire to survive make keeping these pests out rather difficult.
Where will I find cockroaches?
Cockroaches live in various indoor and outdoor locations; anywhere that provides them with their basic needs is a place they will infiltrate.
Cockroaches do best in structures wherever food is stored or prepared, as those structures provide them with the most access to food. Examples of these structures are houses, restaurants, food storage/preparation facilities, grocery stores, pet stores, schools, and dormitories.
If cockroaches have found a way into your home, they are most likely to gather in warm, humid areas like kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms, crawl spaces, and areas of clutter.

How can I prevent cockroaches in the future?
Some tips and strategies to keep cockroaches from taking over your home include taking away their easy access to food by regularly washing dirty dishes, storing food properly, vacuuming, removing trash from your home, and placing all trash bags in containers with locking lids. Since cockroaches are attracted to warmth and moisture, eliminate both from your home by using dehumidifiers, air conditioners, and ensuring kitchens and bathrooms are well-ventilated. Keep cockroaches from easily entering your house by sealing cracks and other openings in the exterior and always inspecting deliveries, secondhand items, and containers or boxes that come into your home.
